ABOUT SCOTT

The math is not the decision.

But if nobody can show you the math, it is hard to know what decision you are actually making.

WHY THIS EXISTS

Very expensive decisions should not end with "trust me."

Employee benefits is a business where a lot of very expensive decisions end with some version of "trust me."

I have never been especially comfortable with that.

I have spent 15 years in the employee benefits and consulting space, working on nearly every side of the spreadsheet: actuarial work, healthcare analytics, carrier underwriting, and employee benefits consulting. I have built the models, priced the renewals, studied the claims, and explained the result to the people who actually had to decide what to do next.

Here is what that taught me:

The math is not the decision. But if nobody can show you the math, it is hard to know what decision you are actually making.

THE WORK

Make the real answer understandable.

As an Employee Benefits Advisor at The Mahoney Group, I help the people responsible for health plans understand what is driving the plan, which options are meaningfully different, and what tradeoffs may be hiding behind the quote.

Sometimes the right answer is to make a change. Sometimes it is to stay exactly where you are. The job is not to force an interesting answer. It is to make the real answer understandable.

That is why I created The Explainable Broker. It is where I take complicated benefits decisions apart and put them back together with the assumptions, arithmetic, alternatives, and limitations visible.

No generic "ten trends to watch." No recommendation floating several feet above its reasoning. Just an honest attempt to show the work.

Outside of work, I am a husband, a father of three, and a lifelong athlete. Benefits may live in spreadsheets, rates, and contracts, but their consequences land with real people and their families. That is worth remembering when the conversation gets buried in acronyms.

START WITH THE WORK

If you are being asked to trust an answer you cannot see, let's make the answer visible.

If you are responsible for a benefits decision and feel like you are being asked to trust an answer you cannot see, that is the kind of conversation I am always interested in having.
